Software roles in the AI mirror: mutation or transformation?

Copilot, ChatGPT, and other AI tools are no longer distant concepts.

David Foote, an analyst at Foote Partners, points to a direct impact of AI on 20 to 25% of technology roles, including positions such as DevOps, UI/UX, systems administration, and even technical support.

Productivity gains are real, but they come at the cost of a profound redefinition of required skills.

This transformation calls for new expertise.
In a study conducted by KPMG and Outsystems, 84% of large organizations have integrated AI into their development lifecycle.

Activities such as testing, quality assurance, and cybersecurity are the first to be automated, but this does not mean jobs will disappear: on the contrary, 75% of respondents believe that developers’ skills will need to evolve, turning them into architects and development experts capable of integrating AI to improve performance and security.

This rebalancing of skills could even strengthen long-term employability.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 25% increase in software developer positions by 2031.

As Sacha Lukic from the Apave Group highlights:

The complementarity between humans and AI thus opens up opportunities for specialization, with sharpened skills in areas such as Big Data, secure architectures, and intelligent automation.

These changes also bring new challenges for companies, particularly around data privacy and regulatory compliance, cited by 56% and 42% of respondents respectively in the KPMG and Outsystems study.

Early feedback shows that a hybrid approach, combining human expertise and AI, remains crucial to ensuring quality and security in increasingly fast-paced development cycles.
